About Us

One of a kind up-cycled pieces and a proud member of 1% for the planet

The Brand

In 2020, Mai Akdeniz was a New York mom with a background in design, a spare bedroom, and some 2020-style free time. But her small side business soon became a mission—a quest to create happy, everyday clothes that were kind to the earth and to the production line. Clothes that were good for running to the market or tumbling around with young children, but with bright, cheery patterns that were fun to slip on. Soon The Picnic Day clothing line had local and Instagram support—and Mai had a full-time job.

Today, the brand offers organic cotton mommy-and-me pairing garments covered with bold prints and vibrant colors that bring extra smiles and wonderful memories for families spending time together.

One of a Kind

Along with the signature organic cotton line, The Picnic Day also offers one-of-a-kind items handcrafted in New York City. Born and raised in Japan, Mai was inspired by her homeland’s rich fashion culture, unique textiles, and distinct styles. Mai creates all her one-of-a-kind items out of discarded, unsold, unwanted clothes and fabric scraps, completely redefining the word “trash.” And one-of-a-kind means exactly that—their origin makes them truly unique.

Our Mission

The Picnic Day is more than cheerful, comfortable family style; it has another mission. Mai wants us to understand where our clothes come from, what materials makers use, and how making them affects the people and the earth. “Every time we spend money, we are casting a vote for the kind of world we want to live in,” she says. “With our knowledge, attention, and action, each of us can contribute to a better, safer future for all our children!

Proud mother and creative entrepreneur, Mai is taking her company on a wonderful, inspiring journey. She hopes The Picnic Day gives you and your children the chance to express who you are and how you feel about this planet we all share—and to have fun doing it!
